Jean Paul Gaultier retires after 50 years

On January 17, 2020, Jean Paul Gaultier shocked the world when he announced via his Twitter account that his 50th anniversary show would also be his last show. He states “This show celebrating 50 years of my career will also be my last. But rest assured Haute Couture will continue with a new concept.”

Jean Paul Gaultier has been known for his over the top and irreverent fashion style. He released his first collection in 1976. He founded his label Jean-Paul Gaultier in 1982. But he did not make his couture debut until 1997 with Gaultier PARIS.

Also, in the video included with the farewell messages he continues on by saying “Stay tuned. Gaultier Paris will go on. The Haute Couture continues. I have a new concept.” Maybe he isn’t quitting and is taking a break?

What we do know is that today, January 22, he showed his final Haute Couture show in Paris. The show was filled with all of his close friends and muses over the years. For this post I will be showing my favorite looks from his couture shows since his first one in 1997. I will not, however, include looks from his last show because I will talk about that in a separate post because I want to focus on his last collection more since it has double the amount of items one of his regular collections would have.
