Today is a special day! It is the queen Bee’s Birthday! To celebrate, I decided to make a nice blog post about her fashion taste and showcase some of her iconic photoshoots to prove she was THAT girl.
Lil Kim really was ahead of her times. She was not only a pioneer for woman but for black woman. A pioneer for woman, because she was rapping and singing like her male counterparts at a time, where it was frowned upon (still kinda is to this day 20+ years later.) And a pioneer for black woman showing them you don’t have to just be the video vixen, you can BE the successful rapper and still be a woman and dress however you’d like.
A lot of the things she would wear back in the 90’s seemed very risqué and out of the box. She didn’t invent wearing colorful hair; but she did popularize it in the mainstream media. This can be most notably seen in her debut single music video “Crush on You” were Kim is pictured wearing four different colored hair; in matching monochromatic outfits and video sets.

Her adoration for fashion was a quick way she made her way into the high fashion world and becoming friends with legends like Alexander McQueen and Donatella Versace. This lead down a fashion road that turned her into a 90’s fashion icon.

While other female rappers of the time dressed like their male counterparts wearing baggy, oversized clothing and mostly covered. While the outfit choices might have been a product of the time; subconsciously it may have been a way to fit in and not be set apart. To be judged on your lyrics rather than your looks.

Kim however; went against the norm of the time; put her foot down and made her mark. She embraced her femininity and oozed of sexuality; not only in the her style but in her raps. This set her apart from her peers because she had a specific image that many tried to copy; but none could recreate. She had the flow to back up the style.

She was never afraid to show skin and was happy to do so. Her style was and still is very eclectic. From her Chanel bangs to Louis Vuitton monogramed body; Lil Kim was setting a standard of how fashion and music mixing can be a beautiful thing for the eye.

Now… here are some of my favorite photo shoots of Lil Kim ! Enjoy ! Let me know what you like and which one is your favorite. This is literally only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Lil Kim photo shoots/ covers.
