Since it is the first Monday of May, today would be the annual met gala. For those of you who may not know what the Met gala is or don’t much details other than its a big night for fashion, it’s much more. The Costume Institute Gala aka Met Gala was established in 1948 by New York City’s Metropolitan Museum Art’s Costume Institute. It is hosted annually to raise funds for the Institute. Each year also has a specific theme that will showcase various garments that represent the theme and will be shown in the exhibition that goes in tangent with the Ball. (Also, Met Gala and Met Ball are interchangeable. )
But due to safety reason because of Covid-19, the ball this year was postponed. Instead of looking back at 2019’s Met Gala, I decided to go a little more back to 2011’s Met Gala. That year the theme was Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. This theme and exhibit honored the late fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. Here, I will list my top 10 best dressed that night, from 9 years ago.
10. Demi Moore
Here the actor wears a strapless Prabal Gurung gown with an over the top hat by Philip Tracey. You get the McQueen vibe with the dark dress and the feathers in the dress and the headpiece.
9. Chloë Sevigny
Here Sevigny wears an actual McQueen design. I like this dress because although it may look simple, it’s all in the details. The all-over lace detailing, the pearl bow on the top of the dress giving it a more gothic-chic look.
8. Tory Burch and Kanye West
Here the pair are both wearing custom made pieces by the designer. The McQueen effect is felt in this gown by the black lace overlaid on the white lace. Also the safety pin as a button, is also another thing I like, because it’s done on purpose when it can be fixed. (Idk if you guys know what I mean. Lol)

Here the actor wears a chiffon dress with ostrich feathers by Vionnet. A dark day dream.
6. Rihanna
Now know as the queen of the met gala, a younger Rihanna steps on the red carpet wearing an asymmetrical black lace embroidered gown by Stella McCartney.
5. Hamish Bowel
The US Vogue journalist wears a tararan embroidered Alexander McQueen cape with matching pants, a button down, bow tie, and loafers with fringe. The best man dressed hands down!
4. Taylor Swift
Here a much younger country, now turned pop sensation Taylor Swift wears a one shouldered couture gown by J. Mendel. This is one of the best looks Taylor has delivered to the ball. Again, it’s in the details. Similarly to Kanye’s outfit, Taylor’s gown has hemlines that aren’t “perfect” and look like they were not finished. But it’s actually made to look like that, this gives this gown and Kanye’s blazer that McQueen affect, perfectly imperfect.
3. Salma Hayek
The actor, who was a co-chair that year wore a peach colored, couture gown by Alexander McQueen. Very feminine and light.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow
Here Gwyneth wears a nude crystal embroidered long sleeve dress by Stella McCartney. I like this dress again because of the simplicity of the look. Also the design, the mesh backless moment, and the high slit on the left leg. Minimal with a big impact.
1. Daphne Guinness
The socialite and close friend to McQueen, wore a feather dress by Alexander McQueen. She is the best dressed of the night because she knew the theme and went for it, not holding back. Love that she went for a dress that not many would gravitate towards.
As you can tell a lot of the best dressed I pick were in neutral colors like black, white, grey, nude, etc. Whenever I think of Alexander McQueen, I think of a dark or neutral color pallet, with an eye for detail. This was a great moment for a lot of people to go for it with their fashion. Alexander McQueen is a designer who’s work while being over the top has a meaning and can be dark. I felt like a lot of people wanted to go there, but we’re hesitant because of what others might say. To that I say, a la verga. (Fuck it, in Spanish. Lol) it’s a fun night for fashion, might as well.
