Face Mask: from Necessity to Fashion Statement

For the past few years an item that has become a hot commodity in the street style community is masks. This trend started not at free will, but out of necessity. Originating from Asian countries, wearing a surgical mask was necessary because of how bad the air pollution was. Also used to keep from preventing the spread of any airborne diseases. Consequently, this became a part of these countries street styles. People did not let this from expressing themselves through their outfits. From different prints and colors, the citizens of these countries showed their eclectic taste.

Designer Touch

To either capitalize from the influx of face mask use in Asian countries or be on trend with the times (a little bit of both) designer brands are designing their own face mask for the public to wear. From high fashion brands like Chanel and Gucci to street wear brands like Off-white, brands put their own twist to the surgical face mask. Ranging from practical to not practical at all; the designers made the mask chic.

With the current situation of the Coronavirus epidemic people are using more face masks than usual. While it is suggested that only people with the virus are should be wearing the face mask to prevent further spread, people are taking the further step and wearing it even if they are not infected. Fashion evolves and adapts with the times. Similarly to the way that tanning became popularized in the 1920’s; face masks are becoming popular not only because it can be “trendy” or “fashionable” but because it can benefit your overall health by preventing the contraction or spread of diseases.
